What is wise mind and why it’s important?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Wise mind refers to a state of mind or being where you are at your wisest and make the most effective decisions. Our goal is to help you learn how to recognize Wise Mind and how to intentionally access that state, even when you are upset.

First, let’s distinguish Wise Mind from two other states of mind that we frequently experience.

Emotion Mind

Emotion Mind is the state in which your emotions control your thoughts, urges, and behaviors. When you’re in Emotion Mind, your emotions dictate your responses, regardless of your long-term goals.

  • With anger, you might lash out at someone or engage in road rage.
  • With sadness, you might stay in bed all day and neglect responsibilities.

Certain vulnerabilities make you more likely to fall into Emotion Mind, such as:

  • Being tired, hungry, or physically ill
  • Feeling stressed
  • Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Reasonable Mind

Reasonable Mind is a state where logic and reason control your thoughts, urges, and behaviors.

  • When you’re in Reasonable Mind, facts and logic dictate your responses.
  • You might demand that things go a certain way because it “makes sense” according to logic.

At first, Reasonable Mind might sound ideal. However, logic without emotions can lead to losing your sense of values and empathy.

  • In Reasonable Mind, you might overlook that someone is upset and fail to respond with care and understanding.

Wise Mind

Wise Mind represents the integration of Emotion Mind and Reasonable Mind.

  • It involves knowing the facts and logic of a situation while also tuning into emotional and sensory experiences.
  • Wise Mind is often described as a centered, intuitive gut feeling that you can sense in your body.

Practicing Wise Mind

Finding your Wise Mind takes practice. Here are some ways to access it:

1️ Focus on your breath – Pay attention to your breath moving in and out of your body. As you exhale, shift your focus to the center of your breath.

2️ Use Wise Mind breathing – As you inhale, silently say “Wise”, and as you exhale, say “Mind”.

3️  Ask Wise Mind a question – Take a deep breath in, ask your Wise Mind a question, then exhale and simply listen. Don’t force an answer—just notice what comes up.

Why Wise Mind Matters

Wise Mind is a powerful skill that helps you move toward a more centered, balanced state, allowing you to make decisions that are both thoughtful and effective.
