By Nil Kartal, Child and Adolescent Psychologist
Quick answer: How to find a child psychologist in Dubai comes down to four checks: a current licence from the DHA or the CDA, training and experience specifically with children (not just adults), an approach that fits your child’s age (play-based work for younger children, adapted CBT for older ones), and a clear plan for how you, the parent, will be involved. Then book a parents-only first appointment and see whether the psychologist listens as well as they explain.
Most parents start this search at ten at night, after a hard bedtime or a call from school, typing “child psychologist Dubai” and scrolling through clinic pages that all say roughly the same thing. This guide on how to find a child psychologist in Dubai is what I would tell a friend who asked me how to choose, based on ten years as a school psychologist in Dubai and my work now with children aged three to twelve at Belle Vie.
First, do you need a psychologist or someone else?
A few families who contact us actually need a different door. If your main concern is speech, a speech and language therapist is the right start. If it is motor skills, sensory processing or handwriting, an occupational therapist. If you are looking for a formal diagnosis of autism or ADHD, that is usually a multidisciplinary assessment, and a psychologist may be one part of it. If a child is talking about hurting themselves, or you are frightened for their safety, that is an emergency and the nearest emergency department or 998 comes before any of this.
A child psychologist is the right choice when the difficulty is emotional or behavioural: anxiety, big tantrums past the age you would expect, withdrawal, school refusal, trouble after a move or a loss, friendship problems, sleep or separation difficulties that are not settling. If you are not sure whether your child needs therapy at all, start with the signs parents often miss. And if you are still unsure, a psychologist can help you work out which door you need; that first conversation is a legitimate reason to book.
How to find a child psychologist in Dubai who is properly licensed
In Dubai, psychologists are licensed by one of two regulators. The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licenses practitioners working in healthcare facilities; the Community Development Authority (CDA) licenses psychologists and therapists working in community and social care settings. Both are regulated, both require verified qualifications, and both are legitimate. What you want to avoid is someone with neither.
Ask directly: “Which body are you licensed with, and can I see the licence number?” A licensed psychologist will not mind the question. Then ask what their qualification is in. A master’s or doctorate in psychology is the baseline; a coaching certificate or a weekend course is not.
Check that they actually work with children
This is the check parents most often skip. Many excellent adult psychologists list “children” on their profile because they can, not because they do. Children are not small adults. A six-year-old cannot sit on a sofa and describe her feelings for fifty minutes, and a psychologist who expects her to will conclude she is “not engaging”.
Questions that separate the two: How many children do you currently see each week? What age range do you work with most? What training do you have that is specifically about children? Answers you are looking for include child-centred play therapy, child-adapted CBT, parent-child work, or a background in schools or paediatric settings. At Belle Vie, the child therapy service is built around play-based approaches for younger children and adapted CBT for older ones, because that is what the evidence supports for those ages.
Match the approach to your child’s age
For children of roughly three to seven, play is the language. In play therapy the child uses toys, art, sand and stories to show what they cannot yet say, and the psychologist works inside that play rather than interrupting it. It looks like playing. It is not aimless.
From around seven or eight, children can begin to use adapted forms of cognitive behavioural therapy: naming feelings, noticing the thoughts behind them, practising small brave steps. Even then, a good session for a nine-year-old still has movement, drawing and games in it.
For trauma after a frightening event, child EMDR is an option in some cases. Ask how the psychologist decides which approach to use; “it depends on the child” is a better answer than a single method for everyone.
Ask how parents are involved
You should not be handed a child back at the door each week with no information. In good child therapy, parents are part of the work. Expect a first appointment with parents only, without the child, so the psychologist can take a full history. Expect regular parent sessions or updates. Expect practical suggestions for home, because the changes that matter happen between sessions, not in them.
Ask about confidentiality too. Older children need a private space to speak, and a psychologist will protect that, but you should always be told about anything that concerns your child’s safety and about the general direction of the work.
How to find a child psychologist in Dubai: practical questions to ask before you book
- Do you see children in person, online, or both? For young children, in person is nearly always better.
- What languages do you work in? A child who thinks in Turkish or Arabic may not be able to do emotional work in English.
- How long is a session, and how often would you expect to see my child at the start?
- How will we know it is working, and how will we decide when to stop?
- Do you liaise with schools, and how does that work?
What the first appointment involves
At Belle Vie the first appointment is with parents or caregivers only. We talk through what has been happening, when it started, what has changed at home or school, your child’s early development and health, and what you are hoping for. It usually takes fifty minutes to an hour. From there we agree a plan: how often to meet, what the sessions will look like for your child’s age, and how you will be involved. Your child’s first session comes after that, and it is designed to be a good experience for them, not an interrogation.
Trust your read of the person
Qualifications get you a shortlist, and that is really all the “how to find a child psychologist in Dubai” checklists can do. What gets you the right psychologist is how they are with your child and with you. Did they explain things without jargon? Did they ask you good questions? Did your child seem at ease, or at least curious? Children pick up on adults who are genuinely interested in them very quickly. If after two or three sessions it does not feel like a fit, say so. A good psychologist will not take it personally and may suggest someone better suited.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can a child start therapy?
Play-based therapy can begin from around age three. Below that, the work is usually with parents.
Do I need a referral to see a child psychologist in Dubai?
No. You can contact a psychology practice directly. Some insurance policies ask for a referral for reimbursement, so check yours.
Will my child be labelled or diagnosed?
Not automatically. Many children come for support through a difficult period and no diagnosis is needed or made. Where an assessment would help, it is discussed with you first.
How long does child therapy take?
It varies with the child and the concern. Some difficulties settle in a handful of sessions; others need longer, especially where there has been a loss or a frightening experience. We review progress with you regularly rather than leaving it open-ended.
Can therapy be done online for children?
For teenagers, often yes. For young children, in-person sessions work far better, and at Belle Vie child therapy is in person at the JLT clinic.
