When Work Stress Stops Switching Off
Burnout therapy in Dubai is one of the most common reasons people contact us. You are still getting the work done, but it costs more than it used to. You wake up tired, you dread the first message of the day, and evenings and weekends no longer refill you.
Our psychologists help you understand what is keeping you in that state and what would need to change for it to ease.
Burnout Therapy in Dubai: What It Is and How We Help
What burnout is, and what it is not
The World Health Organization describes burnout as the result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It has three parts: exhaustion, growing distance or cynicism about your work, and a sense that you are no longer effective at it.
Burnout is not a medical diagnosis and it is not a weakness. It also overlaps with depression and anxiety, and the three can look alike from the inside. Part of a first session is working out which one you are dealing with, because the right help differs. The Mayo Clinic has a useful overview of job burnout and how to spot it.
Signs it is more than a busy period
- Tiredness that a weekend or a holiday does not fix
- Lying awake replaying work, or waking at 4am with a task list
- Irritability at home over small things
- Feeling detached from work you used to care about
- Trouble concentrating, more mistakes, slower decisions
- Headaches, stomach problems or frequent colds
- Using food, alcohol or scrolling to come down at night
Why switching off is so hard in Dubai
Long hours, messages across time zones and a job that is often tied to your visa make it difficult to step back. Many people here are also far from the family and friends who would normally notice they are struggling, which is part of what we see in expat mental health more widely.
Josephine Younes, one of our psychologists, wrote about this for Feelingood Global in How to Switch Off From Work. Her point is that the problem is rarely a lack of discipline. A mind under constant demand stays on alert, and it needs a different approach than trying harder to relax.
How burnout therapy in Dubai works at Belle Vie
We start with what is driving it: workload, a difficult manager, perfectionism, difficulty saying no, or a role that no longer fits. Then we work on both sides.
What you can change in yourself. Cognitive behavioural therapy for overthinking and self-criticism, acceptance and commitment therapy for clarifying what matters to you, and mindfulness-based skills for settling the body at night.
What you can change around you. Boundaries, conversations with your employer, and decisions about the role itself.
Therapy cannot fix an unreasonable workload. It can help you see your options clearly and act on them.
When stress management is not enough
If low mood, loss of interest or worry are present most days, we treat those directly, with depression therapy or anxiety therapy. When sleep has broken down or symptoms are severe, an appointment with our psychiatrist can sit alongside therapy.
Who you will work with
Dr. Elif Celebi Adam, Josephine Younes, Gordon Shaw and Tuna Bereket all work with burnout and work stress in adults. When you book, we match you with the psychologist whose experience and availability fit best.
What to expect
Burnout therapy in Dubai at Belle Vie is one to one. Sessions are 50 minutes, in person at our JLT clinic or through online therapy across the UAE. In the first session your psychologist takes a history, asks about work, sleep and health, and agrees a plan with you. Sessions are confidential and we do not contact your employer. Fees are listed on our FAQ page.
Frequently asked questions
Is burnout the same as depression?
No. Burnout is tied to work and often eases when you are away from it. Depression affects every part of life. The two can occur together, which is why we assess for both in the first session.
Do I have to leave my job to recover from burnout?
Usually not. Most people recover by changing how they work and how they respond to pressure. Sometimes therapy makes it clear that a change of role is the right decision.
Can you give me a letter or a sick leave certificate for work?
Your psychologist can provide a letter confirming that you attend sessions. We do not issue sick leave certificates.
Can I have burnout therapy online?
Yes. Sessions are available by secure video anywhere in the UAE, as well as in person at our clinic in JLT.
Will my insurance cover burnout therapy?
Billing is pay and claim. If your policy covers psychology, you can submit our invoice to your insurer.
